Fourth Printing
Evidently Blindsight has gone into a fourth printing. Don't know exactly when, or the size of the run, or anything beyond the basic fact that it happened; hell, I wouldn't even know that much if some guy at the Wall Street Journal hadn't mentioned it.
Whatever the source, though, it's good news.

Congrats on the new printing! Perhaps now my friends will stop saying "but I couldn't find it at the book store" when I tell them to check it out. On a side note I was actually able to convince my mother, who is very intelligent but certainly not someone you would exactly describe as a SciFi geek, to get Blindsight recently. And she loved it.
It seemed to tell me that the book goes beyond a traditional SciFi role and can appeal to a general population of people who are intelligent and enjoy the mental/philosophical challenges and questions presented therein, while still appealing to the Hard SciFi crowd. Perhaps that is why it was nominated for a Sunburst Award, even though it might have seemed a bit out of place.
Or someone paid them off. I think I'll go with the former.
Karl Schroeder took one look at the short list and wondered who I must have slept with. Not that I wouldn't have if I thought it would have done any good, but I only know two of the Sunburst organisers; one's male, the other is a person of, er, much faith and not as much curiosity, and neither of them like me very much. So I didn't really have that option.
That's great news! So far at least two of the people I've recommended the book to have been able to find new copies in bookstores. Another printing bodes well for the hopes of my future recommendees.
Then I guess you have some secret admirers within the ranks of the organisers.
I know this is a tad off topic, but unfortunately I missed the chance to reply to your original Unsung Heroes post when it was at the top of the list. My curiosity is getting the better of me...is there any way you can give those of us who have no chance of attending your talk at York a little preview or window into the talk you will be giving?

Well, I plan on starting off with bitter complaints about the anachronistic absurdity of cathode-ray-tube technology on the Nostromo. Then I'll segue (by way of Jim Kirk's pointy sideburns) to an explanation of why anachronism in Battlestar Galactica is cool, even though there's more of it than there ever was in Alien. Finally, I'll tie those two threads together to conclude that all advanced technological societies will be run by pedophiles and suicide bombers.
There. Now you don't have to go. (And for the record, it turns out it's not actually being held at York, although York faculty are organising it; it's being held in the Merrill Collection, in downtown TO.)

But seriously, you need to get an agent and write another book. My WWS (Watts Withdrawal Symptoms) are getting severe... ;)
